Mouth Cancer Awareness & Screening

Mouth Cancer Screening for Patients in Yeovil, Sherborne, Ash, Barrington, Batcombe, Beaminster & the surrounding Dorset area.

Although still infrequent, with only around 6200 cases currently diagnosed in the UK each year, Mouth Cancer is becoming increasingly common so building Mouth Cancer Awareness is of great importance.

Mouth Cancer Awareness – know the facts. Research shows that men over the age of 40 are at greatest risk. Women and younger people, however, do occasionally present with this disease. Although in many cases the cause is not known, mouth cancer is often associated with smoking and heavy drinking.

The lips, tongue, cheeks and throat can all be affected. The most usual indication of the disease, however, is a painless ulcer that does not heal as expected. From time to time, the first sign may be a red or white patch inside the mouth. If you have a patch or an ulcer that does not heal within three weeks, it is very important that you visit your dentist.

The chances of a full recovery following mouth cancer are very good. This is if it is caught in the early stages; the earlier it is caught, the higher the chances of survival. Your dentist inspects your mouth thoroughly for mouth cancer at every check-up. They might also examine your neck for any swellings. If your dentist has any concern that you may have mouth cancer, you will be rapidly referred to a specialist. They will then re-examine you and, if indicated, organise further tests. Although this can be a worrying time, the majority of such referrals are not diagnosed as cancer.
